According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10 percent of all fatal car accidents in the nation involved distracted driving in 2010, while 18 percent of injury accidents involved the reckless action, a statistic that has the legal team at Page Law concerned for the safety of all Missouri drivers.

A recently-released study by the NHTSA found that vehicle crashes that involved distracted driving resulted in 416,000 injuries and 3,092 deaths. Additionally, five percent of truck drivers involved in fatal accidents were reported as distracted while seven percent of passenger car drivers in fatal crashes were distracted. Cell phone distraction was reported as involved in408 deaths and 24,000 injuries. Drivers who were younger than 20 years old and drivers from age 20 to 29 were reported to be the largest age groups involved in fatal distracted driving crashes.
Distracting actions that were listed as most common causes of accidents included daydreaming, distracted by a person or object outside the vehicle, talking on a cell phone, and using a cell phone in some other way. Despite various laws prohibiting distracted behavior such as cell phone use, distracted drivers continue to be a frequent cause of accidents throughout the nation.

Common distractions include cell phone use, changing the radio, talking with occupants, and daydreaming. Any and all of these can result in the three forms of distraction: manual (hands off the wheel), visual (eyes off the road), and cognitive (mind off of driving). It only takes a few seconds for distraction to cause a disastrous accident.
