NHTSA Continues to Investigate BMW 7-Series Car Transmission Problems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently took steps to begin recalling several BMW 7-series model vehicles after a continued investigation into the cars’ transmission problems revealed a series of incidents in which drivers, passengers, or pedestrians could have been seriously injured.

The investigation began several months ago after owners of the vehicles reported that their vehicles had rolled down an incline even after they were turned off and the driver had put the car in park. The NHTSA has recorded over 50 such complaints in the past several months.

The vehicles that may be affected by the auto product recall were built in model years 2002 through 2008. They have push-button ignitions and electronic transmission controls, which are typically also operated by pushing a button. In some cases, the vehicle may stay in neutral even if the buttons are pushed for park, which can cause a rollaway accident.

One report sent to the NHTSA from a BMW owner reported that, after the driver parked the vehicle in a day-care center parking lot, the vehicle rolled across the parking lot and into an embankment. Another driver reported his vehicle rolling backwards into a lamp post after he had turned off the ignition, which is supposed to put the vehicle in park automatically. Luckily, no one was injured in either accident.

Sometimes, it’s easy to see what caused a crash. In other cases, however, the cause of the accident is hidden in a defective part deep within the vehicle.
