Safety Tips for Prom Night

Schools throughout San Diego and southern California will be holding their proms soon, and many high school students are looking forward to the special night. Parents and caregivers can help teens stay safe during prom night by reviewing the following safety tips with them.

Tips for Parents

  • Talk about the “ground rules” for prom night. These include the school’s rules of conduct, your teen’s curfew, and the rules about avoiding drinking or riding with others who have been drinking.
  • Know how your son or daughter is getting to and from prom and who he or she is going to prom with. If your teen plans to go to parties before or after the event, talk to other parents about these events, where they will be, and how you and your teen can communicate.
  • Discuss ways your teen can duck out of pressuring situations like being offered alcohol, riding with an intoxicated driver, or being pressured for sexual activity.

Tips for Teens

  • Don’t drink or ride with friends who have been drinking. Even one drink is illegal if you’re under the age of 21.
  • Plan your night, including how you will travel to and from prom and other parties. Make sure your parents know who you plan to be with and at what times.
  • Charge your cell phone and keep it with you. Carry extra money so you can call a cab if you need one, or have the number of another responsible person handy if you get stuck without a ride.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels dangerous or uncomfortable, leave and call your parents or another responsible person for help.
