Follow These Tips to Prevent I.D. Theft When Filing Your Taxes

Every year, tax season brings increased awareness to people across the United States concerning identity theft and the risks they face. Reports from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) indicate that I.D. theft is increasing at a rapid rate, with a new victim every three seconds. In fact, the FTC has reported that identity theft is the number one consumer complaint for the 11th straight year.

More I.D. thieves are taking advantage of tax season to steal vital information from victims. This way, they can file tax returns and claim the refund for themselves as well as use this information to make purchases.

To prevent identity theft from affecting you, Experian program ProtectMyID has provided the following useful information:
  1. If you’re using a tax preparation app on your smart phone that requires you to take photos of your W2s, delete the images after everything has been completed. This way if your  phone is hacked or stolen, a thief won’t obtain this information.
  2. Do not use public computers to electronically file a tax return. These machines may be accessed by others with bad intentions. Also, do not email or text information to the IRS. This is less secure than using a website.
  3. Keep vital documents in a safe or locked filing cabinet. Especially do not leave them in your car, which could be broken into.
