Winter Worries: Keeping Safe in Your Car in the Cold

With the winter season still well underway and the cold settling in for several more weeks, we wanted to share some important tips for Massachusetts drivers to keep in mind while venturing out on the wintry roadways.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has come out with these very helpful reminders to stay safe while behind the wheel if you’re caught in the cold:
  • Ensure that your vehicle’s radiator is in top condition
  • Be sure to check your antifreeze levels regularly and don’t let the levels get low
  • Make sure your tires are ready for the roads by checking the treads on each tire.  Consider replacing worn tires with snow tires or all-weather tires for extra safety
  • For your windshield washer fluid, pick up a special wintertime formula instead of the basic washer fluid you use in the warmer months
Put together an emergency kit to have in your vehicle at all times in the colder months in the unfortunate event you get stranded somewhere.  The kit should include the following items:
  • Blankets
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Snacks and bottled water
  • Jumper cables
  • Flares, to alert others of your vehicle’s location
  • Pump for your tires in case of a slow leak
  • A bag of cat litter or sand for traction purposes, if you’re stuck on ice, snow or slush
  • Map book
  • Compass
  • Plastic bags, for sanitation purposes
