September 27, 2012 is RAINN Day: Raise Awareness and Educate against Sexual Violence and Assault

Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) Day is an annual campaign to help spread awareness about sexual assault and recovery resources as well as educate students against sexual violence. While the campaign’s main focus is college campuses, the message of RAINN Day is for people of all ages and walks of life.

What is RAINN?

RAINN is the leading anti-sexual violence organization in the United States and Worth magazine has referred to it as one of “America’s 100 Best Charities.” As the creator of the free and confidential National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE and online.rainn.org), RAINN also operates in partnership with over 1,100 local rape crisis centers throughout the nation. RAINN Day is one of many events and programs that the organization conducts to prevent sexual violence, assist survivors, and bring rapists to justice.

Get Involved

Those who would like to help plan an event on their college campus can refer to the RAINN 2012 Event Planning Guide. RAINN is also holding a Multimedia Contest in which applicants can submit a RAINN Day event video and/or pictures. The winner will be featured on Cosmopolitan

More than Just Numbers

The following are statistics provided by RAINN and help to emphasize the serious reach of sexual assault and why it must be stopped:
  • 44% of victims are under the age of 18
  • 80% are under the age of 30
  • Every two minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted
  • Each year, there are about 207,754 victims of sexual assault
  • 54% of sexual assaults are not reported to police
  • 97% of rapists will never spend a day in jail
  • Approximately 2/3 of assaults are committed by someone known to the victim
  • 38% of rapists are a friend or acquaintance
While these numbers may be shocking, one incident of sexual assault is one too many and survivors of sexual abuse are never just a number. Sexual violence and assault prevention begins with bringing awareness to the issue so as to better educate both men and women about what sexual violence and assault actually is, what the consequences are, and what resources are available.

 Help is Available

There is no excuse for sexual assault. Survivors must overcome significant emotional and physical challenges after an act of violence, which can be made all the more challenging when the person who committed the assault is a friend, superior, family member, teacher, clergy member, or significant other. A survivor is never at fault or to blame for the sexual assault. Sexual assault resources in Massachusetts are available and legal action can be taken to help ensure that the attacker never harms another person and is brought to justice.
